For Software as a Service, the provider handles nearly everything, and your responsibility focuses mainly on user access management and how you configure the application.
The confusion and breaches often occur at the boundaries of responsibility. Many organisations assume their cloud provider is handling security aspects that are actually their responsibility. A misconfigured storage bucket that exposes sensitive data to the public internet? That’s not the provider’s fault—you configured it that way (or failed to configure it properly). Weak passwords allowing unauthorised access? Also your responsibility. The vast majority of cloud security breaches result from customer configuration errors, not provider vulnerabilities.

If someone physically steals a hard drive from a data centre (which, given the physical security, is vanishingly unlikely), they shouldn’t be able to read its contents. But here’s where it gets nuanced: Who controls the encryption keys? In provider-managed encryption, the cloud provider generates and manages the keys. It’s simple and transparent—you don’t need to do anything. For highly sensitive data, you might want customer-managed keys, where you generate and control the keys. The provider never has access to the decryption keys, so they genuinely cannot access your data. This provides stronger security but adds complexity—lose your keys, and your data is irrecoverably lost. There’s no “forgot your key” recovery process with strong encryption.
Some organisations go further with client-side encryption, where data is encrypted before it ever leaves their premises. The cloud provider stores only encrypted blobs, impossible to decrypt without keys that never leave the customer’s control.
